The two‐energies turbulence scheme coupled to the assumed PDF method

An update of the two-energy turbulence scheme is presented, 2TE + APDF scheme. The original version able to successfully model shallow convection without need an additional parameterization for non-local fluxes. However, performance worse in stratocumulus cases, where it tends overestimate erosion stable layers. We have identified causes: stability parameter does not consider local stratification, lacks internal that could distinguish between a regime and regime, uses inflexible length scale formulation. To alleviate this problem, we propose several modifications: parameter, modified computation scale, introduction entropy potential temperature regime. In addition, coupled simplified assumed probability density function method order achieve more universal representation cloudy regimes. updated evaluated idealized cases one selected real case ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) modeling framework. results show corrects overmixing problem cases. comparable operational setup, can be thus used instead ICON. Additionally, improves coupling with dynamics, which beneficial coherent flow structures atmospheric boundary layer.
